During the early years, the Tykes were a strong team in English football as they finished third place in the second division in 1922. Barnsley have enjoyed their greatest triumphs in the FA Cup, reaching the final in the 1910 FA Cup, suffering a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United, however two years later they met West Brom in the final and despite going to a replay, they won 1-0 thanks to a Harry Tufnell winning goal. Barnsley were then regular members of the second division for 60 years, however they suffered relegation in the year 1959 and struggled in the league suffering relegation in to the lower divisions. The 1988 – 89 season was their finest in ages as they narrowly missed out on a play off place, finishing off in seventh place in the second division. They struck goal during the 1996 -1997 campaign as they earned promotion in to the premiership under the guidance of Danny Wilson. Their stay in the top flight only lasted one year and they gradually have deteriorated into o a third tier football side in recent times.

Gwyn Thomas – Thomas commenced his football career with Leeds United in the year 1975 and nine years later, the tenacious Welsh midfield player entered the Barnsley team in 1984 and played for the Tykes over 200 times before moving to Hull City for £25,000 in 1990.

FA Cup final – 1912

Barnsley reached the FA Cup final for the second time in three years as they faced West Brom in the crucial encounter. A big and robust side, Barnsley was the clear underdogs in the final against first division outfit, West Bromwich Albion. The encounter played at Crystal Palace, finished in another goalless draw, which set up a replay at Bramall Lane. Barnsley won the cup final with two minutes remaining from the end of extra time. The ball was cleared up field to Harry Tufnell, who scored Barnsley’s goal in the 1910 final. As he raced towards the West Brom goal, Tufnell was pursued by Jess Pennington, however Tuffnell scored the winning goal.

Barnsley came in to this match on the back of three defeats and they were in emphatic form in ending their losing streak against Oldham Athletic. Jacob Burnes scored to make the score line 1-0. Plymouth came in to this match on a flying run whereas Barnsley were looking to prevent defeat. It was Barnsley that took the early lead to everyone’s surprise as Antony Kay score to make it 1-0. Sylvan Ebanks Blake equalized for Plymouth and Hayles put Argyle in front after 34 minutes with a cracking goal. After end to end action, Richards equalized for Barnsley on the 50th minute to share the points between the two clubs.
